Factors In Hair Loss

Hair loss can be influenced by various internal and external factors—including hormones, genetics, stress, age, and even how your scalp heals after procedures like a hair transplant.

Following a transplant, the donor area typically experiences more visible trauma than the transplant site, as larger extractions are made to harvest follicles. To aid healing and prevent exposure to dirt or bacteria, we apply a thin layer of Vaseline over the donor region and cover it with a sterile bandage.

What Are The Underlying Causes of Baldness?

Hair loss in males is influenced majorly by factors such as hormones and genetics. The life cycle of hair follicles are affected both naturally and genetically and, over time, can result in the development of androgenetic alopecia, a condition that may be genetically inherited.

Although traditionally it was believed to be “inherited from the mother and expressed in the sons,” soon after research discovered that this was not solely the case. The condition can be passed down from either parent and can affect both son and daughter. However, that is not to say that every carrier will be affected by androgenetic alopecia.

Consequently, baldness, and thinning of hair can also be caused due to stress, medication and age.

Hormonal Hair Loss

The main hormones involved in hair loss in males are testosterone and DHT (dihydrotestosterone). Both hormones play an essential role in providing the necessary characteristics for males. The enzyme ‘5-alpha reductase’, changes the composition of testosterone to DHT, which in high levels hinders the growth of hair follicles.

Ageing

Age affects hormones, and the above mentioned can cause miniaturization – the process of diminishing hair strands and ultimately, hair follicles. As a result, strands reduce in diameter and length. Some may experience this at earlier stages in life than others, due to genetics and family history.
