Hair Transplant Aftercare: What to Know After Surgery

At City Clinics, we believe that proper aftercare is just as crucial as the hair transplant procedure itself. Taking the right steps both before and after your hair transplant surgery can make all the difference in your results.

Caring for the newly transplanted area—and the donor site, usually located at the back of the neck—is essential for optimal healing, minimising infection risk, and ensuring long-lasting success. Our expert team will guide you every step of the way.

How Long Will Recovery Take?

Recovery can take up to 2 weeks, but most of our clients can heal in 7 days. During this time, the newly transplanted follicles can make the scalp area feel tight and might possibly ache – this can be made more comfortable with over the counter painkillers such as paracetamol after the course of antibiotics has been finished. You may also experience scabbing over of the areas where the hair has been transplanted – please do not try and pick at these as they will need time to fall off on their own to aid a healthy recovery. Our surgeons will show you how to wash these away if they persist after two weeks.

You may also experience something called ‘Shock Loss’ – which is a perfectly healthy and normal part of the recovery period. There will also be an amount of shedding present as the new hair grows and the life cycle of the newly implanted follicles begins to settle. Do not be alarmed, this is a good sign that the transferred follicles are settling and adjusting to their new placement. If our patients are worried about any of these elements of the healing process, they can contact us to discuss them and we can best advise on what to do to help you feel more comfortable.

Our patients will be asked to come along for a 12 months post operative consultation to assess the new hair growth and to check on progres

Are There Side Effects?

As with any surgical procedures, there can be side effects but most of these are advised as a precaution and do not affect all patients. This includes temporary bruising, bleeding and soreness of the scalp, as well as a feeling of tightness that will pass as the scabs heal. There is also potential for infection at the sites of the hair transplants, which is why we administer a 3 day antibiotic course for all patients upon discharge. Finally, some patients may experience ingrowing hairs at the site of some transplants, which can be rectified by our surgeons if this becomes an issue.

Protective Bandage

Following your hair transplant, a protective bandage will be applied to the donor area—typically at the back of the head. This helps shield the area and supports initial healing.

Our team will provide clear instructions on when and how to remove the bandage safely, minimizing any risk of irritation or infection. Proper care at this stage is vital for the success of your hair transplant recovery.

How to Sleep After Your Hair Transplant

Getting proper rest after your hair transplant surgery is essential for healing. At City Clinics, we advise all patients to follow specific sleeping guidelines during the first few days to protect the newly transplanted area.

Maintaining the right position while you sleep can help reduce swelling and prevent any accidental damage to the grafts. We’ll guide you on how to rest comfortably and safely during recovery.
