Hair Loss Medications
Hair Loss Medications

There are different hair loss medications available and can vary in effectiveness depending on the candidate. Many stop the change in hormone levels that contribute to hair loss. The conversion of testosterone to DHT is a common cause of male and female hair thinning/ balding - unfortunately, this is typically hereditary. The DHT hormone is responsible for breaking down the hair follicles and inhibiting them from producing future hair growth. The correct medication can prevent hair loss or even encourage new growth. Widely known and commonly used are Propecia or Finasteride. However, please note that all available hair loss medication does not necessarily guarantee new hair growth. Typically, the frontal hairline does not respond to medication, like the rest of the head. Though it decreases the rate of hair fall, it is not as efficient in retaining the hairline as the FUE technique. FUE hair transplants are permanent solutions to restore a receding hairline, unlike medication.
Finasteride/Propecia
Finasteride/Propecia

There are many different names for Finasteride, including Propecia, Finax, Proscar, Finpecia and Gefina. Research from a current study shows that 48% of a sample group of men (with mild/ moderate hair loss) grew new hair and, 42% had no further loss. Optimal results attained in particular at the crown area and only on consummation of Finasteride - if suspended, the hair benefits achieved, also come to a halt within 6-12 months of discontinuation.

How Does It Work?
How Does It Work?

The enzyme, Type II 5-alpha-reductase, is used to convert testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can enable early hair loss. Consequently, Finasteride is used as an inhibitor, decreasing the level of DHT by blocking the enzyme and thus the conversion; preventing a shortened hair life cycle.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Are There Any Side Effects?

If taken at the advised dose, side effects are minimal and relatively uncommon. Side effects comprise:

  • Pain in testicles
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced volume of ejaculate
  • Reduced libido
  • Rashes or skin sensitivity/irritation
  • Itching and inflammation of the face
  • Breast tenderness or enlargement

Should any of the above occur upon consumption seek to reverse consequences by terminating the use of Finasteride. In the rare incident that you find yourself still affected, ensure to seek advice from your GP/doctor.

Regaine/Minoxidil
Regaine/Minoxidil

Minoxidil, medicine first introduced to open/dilate blood vessels to allow easy blood flow; reducing high blood pressure. However, after several tests, it was surprisingly shown to promote new hair growth and repair balding. This medication achieves the most favourable results when used during the early stages of hair loss, i.e. patients who experience thinning but are not completely bald.

During the 1980s Minoxidil was marketed as a topical treatment used to treat hair loss, named Rogaine in the USA and Regaine in other countries. It is not precisely, understood why the medication allows hair growth. Scientists speculate that Minoxidil expands the blood vessels surrounding the hair follicles; therefore enhancing the nutrient supply aiding optimal function.

Application
Application

Our doctors will advise you on the dosage, but common usage appears to be, twice a day for at least four months. Results will vary with patients depending on hair density, stage of hair loss and how early, hair loss caught. If hair regrowth is visible after the 4-6 month period, continuous use of the medication is ideal, to maintain results. At first, the new hairs may be colourless, thin and soft - but do not be disheartened. After further treatment, the new hair growth will develop into hair strands that exactly match the texture, density and colour of your existing hair.

If you accidentally miss applications, do not implement a double dose. Instead, continue the usual dosage and do not use more than 1 ml at a time, or on sunburned skin. Ensure to use the hair loss medication for the duration advised by your doctor; this is often an ongoing process. If you find that the hair growth is not apparent within the 4-6 months guidance, please seek further consultation with your doctor and reconsider your options.
